Dr. Avi Chezar – Orthopedic Shoulder Specialist and Senior Shoulder Surgeon

Dr. Avi (Avraham) Chezar is a senior orthopedic specialist in the field of the shoulder and one of the leaders of shoulder surgery in Israel. Every year since 2017 – 10 years in a row – the Forbes Israel survey has named him one of the three leading shoulder doctors in Israel and the leading shoulder specialist in the North. For the last four years (since 2023) he has also been selected by Dun's 100, which ranks the 100 best doctors in Israel by field.

In the public health system, Dr. Chezar is a senior physician in charge of shoulder surgery at Carmel Medical Center in Haifa. In private practice he operates and holds clinics at Assuta Hospital Haifa, Elisha Hospital Haifa and RMC Medical Center Afula. He is also a senior lecturer at shoulder surgery conferences and trains surgeons in Israel and abroad. He previously served as secretary of the Israeli Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Medical training

Medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Technion, Haifa, which he completed with distinction (Dean's honors). General internship at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, completed with distinction. Residency in orthopedic surgery at Rambam Medical Center, Haifa – he passed the specialty board examinations as the national top graduate.

After completing his residency he began working at Emek Medical Center in Afula as a senior physician in the Department of Orthopedics. His main focus was trauma and shoulder problems. He trained in shoulder surgery through arthroscopy courses and through his work with Dr. Moses – including a fellowship at the shoulder unit at Ichilov, Tel Aviv.

Current position and practice

Dr. Chezar works as a senior physician in the Department of Orthopedics at Carmel Medical Center and as an independent physician in private practice.

His main field is shoulder surgery, including:

• Arthroscopic operations to repair tears of tendons and ligaments, and removal of calcifications.
• Open operations to fix fractures and replace joints, including reverse shoulder replacement.

Dr. Chezar is among the few surgeons in the world who perform the complex Latarjet procedure for recurrent shoulder dislocations using a closed arthroscopic technique – which allows faster recovery and fewer complications.

Professional and volunteer activity

Dr. Chezar has extensive experience of thousands of shoulder operations of all types. He is active in the Israeli shoulder society and regularly attends conferences and courses in Israel and abroad. In trauma surgery, he focuses mainly on complex operations that demand the highest level of skill and experience.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Chezar takes part in international conferences, teaches and performs live-broadcast operations in India and China, and advises high-tech companies on the development of advanced medical equipment.

Outside medicine – and close to his heart – Dr. Chezar volunteers with the "Galil Carmel" rescue unit and with the Erez association – which helps people with disabilities take part in adventure sports such as skiing, cycling and sailing.

Dr. Chezar has been recognized by Mitek – the leading company for shoulder instruments and implants – as a European training center of the company.
